Rooms in the City Gate

Note the two chambers in the far portion of the gate. Matching chambers were found on the side of the from which the picture was taken. The pathway into the city proceeds from the lower left (east) portion of the image up to the right (west).

The elders of a typical city are said to have sat in the city gate conducting legal cases, buying and selling property, etc. - see (Gen 23:17-19; Ruth 4:1-11; Amos 5:10-12; and any Bible Dictionary or Encyclopedia).
