View of the Middle Bronze II gate complex,
The structure is covered to protect it from the elements, and the timber–supported penetration into the interior of the gate is visible. A second arch was found in the interior of the gate and then a *third arch on the side of the gate that opens inside the city.
Biran has proposed that the gate is so well preserved because it was purposefully buried in the 50 ft. 15 m.] high rampart that surrounds the city. The base of the massive rampart is 230 ft. [70 m.] wide in spots.
