View of the caldarium of the Byzantine Bath House. The numerous short columns, and the brick ones, supported the floor of hot room (caldarium). In this underground area (hypocaust) hot air circulated and heated the floor.
On the far wall, in the upper half of the image, there are remnants of heating pipes that ran up the wall. Heat from the furnace room, the praefurnium, entered the hypocaust and heated the floor of the caldarium.
