View looking south along the eastern edge of the lower, southern, portion of the city of Jotapata. Note the steep slope on the left (east) side of the image into the valleys far below—on the far left a white truck can be seen in the valley.
Josephus describes Jotapata as "... almost all of it built upon a precipice, having on all the other sides of it ... valleys immensely deep ... that those who would look down would have their sight fail them before it reaches to the bottom" (War 3.7.7 [158]).
This area has been extensively excavated and remains of houses, cisterns, ritual baths, and the city wall have been found here.
