View of the "first-century synagogue" as it was under excavation circa late 2009. Note the basalt benches around the walls of the room. The "stone box" in the center, the basalt column with a remnant of a fresco (in the foreground), and the partial column on the sandbags.
This synagogue was destroyed in A.D. 67. It was excavated by Dina Avshalom-Gorni and Arfan Najar in collaboration with Marcela Zapata.
