Water System Overview

View looking down and northeast at the entrance to the major water system at Beersheba.  The entrance to the underground system is just left of center, where the yellow fence is located.  The entrance to this water system is just inside the city wall—and thus the residents of Beersheba would have had access to water during times of siege.

This was the main water system of Beersheba during the Iron Age.  It consisted of a series of large underground plastered chambers that were filled via underground channels that diverted water from the Nahal Hebron.  These chambers were access via an open vertical shaft and then via an underground diagonal tunnel.
