Eumachia

Eumachia

View of a copy of a statue of Eumachia, a patroness of Pompeii who died around A.D. 15.  She was a priestess of Venus, the chief deity of Pompeii.  She was a patron not only of the city but also the woolworkers, dyers, and launderers at Pompeii.  (The original is in the museum in Naples)  This statue was set up by the powerful guild of wool workers, weavers, dyers, and launderers to honor her.
