Forum of Julius Caesar

View looking southeast down the length of the Forum of Julius Caesar.  This Forum was built in the decade before his death in 44 B.C.  On the left, the platform, on which the three columns are standing, was the foundation of the Temple of Venus Genetrix —the goddess of motherhood and domesticity.  Caesar's family claimed descent from this deity.  This temple was the most important building constructed by Caesar.  It was destroyed and rebuilt several times.

Just to the right of center, note the three stairs that lead up to a portico.  The Forum was outlined on three sides by a double colonnade.  On the right, the arches are arches that covered shops that were located on the south side of the Forum.

In the upper right, note the dome of the church of Santa Luca e Martina and the building just beyond it, barely visible, is the north side of the famous Roman Senate House, the Curia.
