View looking west from the top of Machaerus towards the Dead Sea. Although the day when this picture was taken was hazy, the blue surface of the Dead Sea is visible. Note the steep white/brown limestone and chalk slopes of the hillsides as they fall way into the wadi that “flows” away from the viewer from the lower left portion of the image to the Dead Sea. The near shore of the Dead Sea is only 3.7 mi. 12.5 mi. [6 km.] from Machaerus while the western shore is [20 km.] distant.
There is a 3,600 ft. [1,100 m.] drop in elevation between the top of Machaerus and the surface of the Dead Sea.
This image was taken in October, after the dry months of summer.
