View looking southeast at a portion of the well–preserved aqueduct as it continues to pass through a low area.
The "pipe," through which the water flowed was a series of large blocks of stones; each hollowed out to a diameter of 12 in. [30 cm.] and which were joined together in a socket and flange arrangement. They were sealed by using a mixture of lime and olive oil - which expands and hardens when brought into contact with water.
The canal in the picture, which flows from left to right, is not associated with the aqueduct, but in Roman times, the aqueduct spanned this swampy area.
