Ankara Castle Detail

View of the "Ankara Castle" (aka Citadel).  A close-up view of the citadel of Ankara.  The upper inner walls enclose an area of 13 acres.  Portions of the outer walls are visible lower down on the slope and disappear in the bottom of the photo.

The present fortification walls date to the seventh century A.D.  However, the earliest fortifications go back to the eighth century B.C.  There have been many destructions and rebuilds over the years—Phrygian, Galatians, Romans Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans.

The inner walls mark off an area of 13 acres.
