Lion Gate Interior

View looking south from inside the city wall of Hattusha at the interior of the Lion Gate which is located in the southwestern bend of the southern wall of the city.  The Lions are visible on the outside of the city

The two posts of the interior gate are visible in the photo.

This is one of the two main entranceways into the Upper City—the other being the "Kings's Gate."  Vehicular traffic could pass through this Lion Gate.  The large stone and the steps in the foreground were not part of the original gate

The gate was constructed during the period of the Hittite Empire (1360–1180 B.C.).
