Lion Gate Lion

Lion Gate Lion

A detailed view of the east exterior lion of the Lion Gate.  The head, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, chests and legs are clearly visible.  The mane of the line is visible if you enlarge the photo.  Lions often guarded entrance–ways to cities, palaces, and temples.

This is one of the two main entranceways into the Upper City—the other one being the "Kings's Gate."  Vehicular traffic could pass through this Lion Gate.

The gate was constructed during the period of the Hittite Empire (1360–1180 B.C.).
