King's Gate

King

View looking southeast through the King's Gate from inside Hattusha.  This gate is located in the southeast fortification of the city.  It was flanked by two towers.  It had inner and outer doorways, both parabola-shaped, and was about 15 feet high.  Each entrance was furnished with a pair of wooden doors.

On the left, there is a representation of a god dressed as a warrior with an axe, sword, and helmet (this is a replica).  The original is Here.

The gate was constructed during the period of the Hittite Empire (1360–1180 B.C.).
