Theater Altar and Chairs

In the foreground is the gravel flooring of the orchestra of the theater at Priene.  Just to the right of the center of the image is an altar—often times Dionysis, the god of merriment was worshiped in theaters.  To the left of the altar are two seats with lion paw armrests and feet.  These were for the very elite of the city.  Between then are benches with backs for lesser elites.

Behind them are the seats for the remainder of the residents of Priene and two of the staircases that divide the cavea into wedges (cunei).

The more common seats of the cavea are visible behind the altar and the armchairs.
