Virgin and Jesus

View of the largest surviving mosaic in the Hagia Sophia.  It is high in the “conch” of the apse that is located above where the altar once stood.  The Virgin Mary sits on a bench-like throne holding the infant Jesus on her knees.

She is depicted in a blue flowing robe while Jesus is dressed in gold and wears sandals!
