Acropolis

Acropolis

View of the acropolis from the west looking east.

Along the skyline from left to right: the local mosque (white roof), two towers from the Byzantine period, and in the center the ancient acropolis.  On the right is the beginning of a steep slope down to the Aegean Sea and the harbor of Assos.  Left of center are the red roofed buildings of the village of Behramkale.

The apostle Paul, on his third missionary journey, walked from Alexandria Troas to Assos, a distance of about 20 miles. At Assos he joined his companions, who had come from Troas by ship, and together they set sail for Mitylene (Acts 20:15).
