View looking south at the western gate of Assos. This magnificent gate dates to the fourth century B.C. (Hellenistic Period) and both towers are still standing! The one on the left (east) is almost complete—to a height of 46 ft. [14 m.] and the loopholes and gutters are still intact!!
On the left side of the road some of the sarcophagi are scattered about. It is very possible that the apostle Paul entered Assos via this gate after walking on foot from Alexandria Troas (Acts 20:13, 14).
