View of the remnants of the Royal Road that ran from Susa, in Persia (modern Iran) to Sardis – a distance of 1700 mi. [2725 km.]. This road was established by Darius I (520–486 B.C.) to link his capital Susa with the far western reaches of his empire. Horsemen carried messages (postal system) along this route.
