Latrine

View of the remains of one of the public latrines at Sardis. Note the stone seats, which are affixed to the far wall. Under them water ran in a trough to carry away waste. In front of them, on the floor, notice the groove. It has been suggested that water ran in the groove and was used to wash the "sponge on a stick," which was used in place of toilet paper.
