Byzantine Church 1

View looking down (west) at a well-preserved Byzantine Church/Chapel (Church "M") that was built at the southeast corner of the old Temple of Artemis at Sardis.

On the upper right side of the image several of the large columns of the Temple of Artemis are visible.  Note that in the church there are TWO apses.  In the center of the image is the apse of the original 4th century church.  Below the center of the image is an apse that was added later (10 ft. [5 m.] east of the original apse) as the church was expanded to the east—this later apse has three arched windows.

The church—and Artemis Temple—were covered by a mudslide in the Medieval Period and thus are well preserved.  The church was abandoned in the 7th century.
