Byzantine Basilica 1

View looking east at the Byzantine Basilica at Xanthos.  In the distance the outline of the apse of the church is visible.

In the foreground note the mosaics.

In the center and left side of the image the atrium of the church is visible (it has a column lying on its side in the center of the atrium).  Atriums were open squares, surrounded on three or four sides by covered colonnades.  In this instance the (originally) covered colonnades were paved with mosaics.
