JQ Excavations

View looking southeast at the excavated area of the Jewish Quarter.  In this jumble of foundation stones, note the corbelled drainage channel and the two upright stones that may have supported the roof of a dwelling.

Jewish Quarter: During the first century BC residential structures were built in the area.  Many, with rebuilds and additions, continued in existence through the Talmudic (Byzantine) Era.

Cisterns and other underground spaces were discovered in this area.  The presence of ritual baths and stone vessels and dishes indicate that this was a Jewish area during these periods—thus the name "Jewish Quarter."
