Theater As Excavated

View looking down onto the cavea and orchestra area of the recently discovered theater at the Herodium.  The semi-circular form of the cavea is clearly visible as is the outline of the seats and the stage area.  The theater could seat about 450 people.  In the upper right corner of the image, the ground level of the Lower Herodum far below is visible.

This theater was built into the northern slope of the Herodium.  It was probably built in 15 BC, the year that Marcus Agrippa, the "right–hand man" of the emperor Augustus, visited Judea.
