Dormition Abbey

Dormition Abbey

View looking north at the Dormition Abbey.  This Catholic Church (Benedictine) preserves the memory of Mary—the mother of Jesus—falling into her eternal sleep.  Its bell tower is visible on the right (west) side of the image.

The Church is built over the remains of an old Franciscan Monastery.  The property was given to the German emperor Wilhelm II in 1898 by the Turkish sultan.  The Church was completed in 1910.
