Mosaic Removal from Cross

Mosaic Removal from Cross

View of the modern Greek Orthodox mosaic that portrays events following the death of Jesus.

Reading the mosaic from right to left, here we see the removal of Jesus’ body from the cross.  Note the skull below the cross.  This skull represents that of Adam—the first man who sinned.  The symbolism seems to be that of the second Adam (= Jesus) reversing the curse brought by the first Adam.
