Exterior Detail

View looking southeast at the exterior of St. Anne’s Church.

In the center is the main entrance and just above it, in the pointed arch, is an Arabic inscription describing how Salah edh–Dhin turned it into a Madrassa in 1192.  On the right (south) a truncated bell tower is visible as is the cover (metal and stone) of a cistern.

The raised central section, clerestory, is clearly visible.

The Church, although reconstructed, is one of the best examples of Romanesque Crusader architecture that is preserved in Jerusalem.
