Wine Storage

Wine Storage

View of one of the areas where wine jars were stored at Gibeon.   Clearly visible in the image are the openings to the rock–cut storage pits.  A typical pit was about 7.5 ft. [2.2 m] deep and 6 ft. [2 m.] in diameter at the bottom.

All totaled, 63 pits were found and in some of them 9.5 gal. [36 l.] jars were found.  The wine was stored at a constant temperature of 65 F. [18 C].   If all of these pits storage areas were in use at the same time it is estimated that 25,000 gal. [95,000 l.] of wine could be stored at Gibeon!
