MB II Rampart Detail

View looking east along the mud brick remains of the remains of the Middle Bronze II glacis that surrounded the city of Ashqelon.

Note the field stone surface clearly visible in the lower right quadrant of the image.  This stone cover and been covered with a 4 in. [10 cm.] layer of clay to form a slick surface.  The slope of this glacis was about 40 degrees!

After the original glacis/rampart was built, a series of glacis were built along this same slope—culminating in the medieval fortifications (Click Here to view).

The MB II city gate is sheltered under the roof on the center/left (east) side of the image. To view the gate Click Here.
