Aqueduct

View looking northeast at some of the remnants of the Aqua Claudia.  The aqueduct brought water from a spring in the upper Aniene Valley and supplied the Caelian Hill before reaching the Palatine Hill.  On the Palatine, it flowed into large collection takes that lead into an extensive distribution network of lead pipes that brought water to the Imperial Palaces.

The aqueduct was begun by Caligula (r. 38–41), inaugurated by Claudius (41–54) and enlarged by Nero and the Flavian Emperors (64–96).
