Statue

Statue

A larger-than-life size (10 ft. [3 m.] high) basalt statue of a "hero between two lions" that was found in one of the palaces at Zincirli.  It probably dates to the 9th century BC.

The statue fits into a socket in the base where a dwarfed man squats between two lions.  The head of the man is oversized and is set into the shoulders.  The headdress is very simple.  Note the wide belt and sash and the sword tucked into the belt.

The base of this statutue may have been carved at the Sculptures' Workshop at Yesemk—13 miles southeast of Zincirli.

On display at the Museum of the Ancient Orient in Istanbul.
