Nereid Monument

Working on this.

View of the reconstruction of the Nereid Tomb in the British Museum.  Note the Ionic columns that support the architrave, the pediment, and the gabled room.  In between the columns are three Nereids—girls believed to be the daughters of the sea-god Nereus.  (These are copies; to view the originals Click Here)

In the friezes below the columns, on the top is the depiction of the siege of a city and below this a battle scene of infantry and cavalry in combat.

It is believed that this is the tomb of Arbinas and his family—a prominent leader at Xanthos.  He died around 380 B.C.

The architectural fragments of this monument were removed during the "excavations" of Charles Fellows during 1842 and 1844 to the British Museum and this reconstruction dates to 1967–1969 (from signage at the British Museum).
