East Entrance

East Entrance

A view, looking west, at the East Entrance to the Temple of Artemis.  Originally the entrance to the temple was on the west side, but sometime from the second to fourth centuries AD the temple was divided into two halves.  One half was devoted to Artemis and the other half to Roman Emperors and their families.  At that time, this east entrance was added to the temple.

Visible are the threshold and the lower portions of two door jambs.  The staircase has disappeared.

The mountain in the background is located to the west of Sardis and is not the citadel.
