Byzantine Church 2

Byzantine Church 2

View looking south at a well-preserved Byzantine Church/Chapel (Church "M") that was built at the southeast corner of the old Temple of Artemis at Sardis.

On the right side of the image one of the large columns of the Temple of Artemis is visible.  Note that in the church there are TWO apses.  In the center of the image is the apse of the original 4th century church.  On the left (east) side of the image is an apse that was added later (10 ft. [5 m.] east of the original apse) as the church was expanded to the east.

The church—and Artemis Temple—were covered by a mudslide in the Medieval Period and thus are well preserved.  The church was abandoned in the 7th century.
