Inner Harbor

Inner Harbor

View looking south at the remnants of the inner harbor of Alexandria Troas. Here boats would wait for favorable winds before beginning their difficult journey clockwise and northeastwards up through the Dardanelles (ancient Hellespont) — through which the current flows in the opposite direction — from northeast to southwest!

At one time Constantine thought of making Alexandria Troas his capital instead of Byzantium (modern Istanbul).
