Outer Harbor

Outer Harbor

View looking northwest at the outer harbor of Alexandria Troas — now silted up so that the entrance from the Aegean Sea (center of image) is blocked up.  Here boats would wait for favorable winds before beginning their difficult journey clockwise and northeastwards up through the Dardanelles (ancient Hellespont) — through which the current flows in the opposite direction — from northeast to southwest!

At one time Constantine thought of making Alexandria Troas his capital instead of Byzantium (modern Istanbul).
