Hagia Sophia Church Minaret

View looking northeast at the entrance to the Hagia Sophia Church that was built by Justinian in the sixth century A.D.  Sultan Orhangazi turned it into a mosque in 1331.

This picture was taken in 2006 before "restoration" took place.  Note the truncated minaret on the left side of the church.  Compare this image of the restored church/mosque and restored minaret.

In modern times the church/mosque was turned into a "museum" but more recently restored as a mosque.

The Seventh Ecumenical Council convened here in A.D. 787—the one that restored the veneration of icons in churches.
