North (Istanbul) Gate

North (Istanbul) Gate

A view of the middle passageway, of the three passageway North Gate of Nicea/Iznik.  Today it is called the "Istanbul Gate."

The Gate was first constructed by Vespasian (r, A.D. 98–117) and restored by Hadrian (r. 117-138) and then others.  About 8 feet of the gate is still below ground—unexcavated.  Note, that on both sides of the arched entranceway there are niches into which statues would have been placed.

The brickwork of the wall looks Roman or Byzantine.
