Artemis, Poseidon, Demeter

Artemis, Poseidon, Demeter

A marble grouping of three deities from the agora of Smyrna. These figures are slightly larger than human size. In the center of the grouping is Poseidon (the god of the sea and earthquakes). He probably held a trident in his right hand. Note the dolphin on his lower right side. On his left (right side of image) is a statue of Demeter (the goddess of grain). To his right (left side of image) is the lower half of the goddess Artemis (note the boots and the short skirt of this goddess of the hunt). The grouping was used in an altar complex in the Agora of Smyrna. Roman period.
