Street

Street

This image is of one of the streets of Priene.  Priene was built on a steep hillside, but in spite of this, the streets are laid out in a grid pattern that was imposed on the topography.  This plan is called the "Hippodamian Plan" named after Hippodamus of (nearby) Miletus.  Hippodamus lived in the fifth century B.C.—the time when Priene was established!
