Coffers of the Propylon

Coffers of the Propylon

Looking up at the original pieces of the coffers of one of the side wings of the Propylon (main entranceway) of the North Agora.

The coffers were decorated with fish, vegetation, deities (Dionysus, Ariadnes, Tyche-Hygieia, etc.), and mythological figures (dancing pan, satyrs, maenads).  They will be more visible if you download the image at "Max Size Available" (click upper right).

The Propylon was built at the end of the first quarter of the third century A.D.  It collapsed in an earthquake, was repaired, and went out of use after an earthquake in the early seventh century.
