Ceremonial Chariot Wheel

Ceremonial Chariot Wheel

A detail image of the bronze wheel from the well-preserved bronze remains of a chariot that was built at the end of the Bronze Age and beginning of the Iron Age (ca. 800 B.C.).  The wheels were cast as a whole(!) using the "lost-wax casting" process. Note that the construction of the wheels seems to imply that there was some type of material that was embedded into them for the chariot to "ride on." The wood axel is of course, modern.

The chariot remains were discovered in1888 at Côte-Saint-André (Isère).  Restored by C.R.HK.S. in Nancy.
