Stone Water Channel

Stone Water Channel

View looking north along the east edge of the track at a portion of the stone channel that carried fresh water around the edge of the track.  The water flowed in the carved channel away from the viewer.  Note in the right foreground the square “settling basin” through which the water flowed.  Here dust and dirt would have settled out of the flowing water.

The two carved stones just left of center may have supported a “Nike” monument (goddess of victory).  To the left of the stones the flat stones of the southern starting line, the balbis, are visible.
