Bouleuterion

View looking southeast at the northern portion of the Bouleuterion (the council chamber).  Note the wall that runs from the left down and to the right and that turns into a curve.  The right (west) end of the bouleuterion was apsidal in shape and there was a matching apsidal shaped structure to the south of this with an altar in between.  Although built in stages, the first portion of it was constructed about 550 B.C.

Because Olympia was a sacred precinct, rather than a city, instead of a city council meeting here it has been suggested that the officials of the games met here and that oaths taken by the athletes and the officials were sworn in these precincts.
