Nike Temple

Nike Temple

View looking southwest at the delicate Nike Temple that is located at the entrance—propylaea—of the acropolis.  This gem of the Ionic order (slender fluted columns; volutes; etc.) was constructed late in the fifth century B.C.  Since 1835 it has been reconstructed three times!   The light color stones are from the most recent reconstruction.

The four Ionic Columns on the porch to the left is where the entrance to the temple was.  Portions of the sculptured frieze that ran around the top of the temple are visible.
