Orchestra Detail

View looking north across the orchestra area of the theater at Delphi.  In the lower right portion of the image a portion of the drain that encircles the orchestra area is visible as is the balustrade that separates it from the orchestra area (left).

On the far right of the image the square pillar actually has a weathered Greek inscription on it.

The theater has 35 rows of seats, a diazoma and could hold about 5,000 spectators.  Several portions of the cunei are visible as are the stairways that separate them.

The orchestra area is almost a complete circle.  It is paved with polygonal stone slabs and has a diameter of about 60 ft. [18 m.].

Beyond and above the cavea of the theater the base of the Phaedriades Cliffs are visible.
