Stoves

Stoves

View of two stoves.  The one on the right, with the pot on it, merely consists of three large stones on top of which the pot is placed.  Under the pot some brush is visible, and this is where the fire that would heat the pot would burn.

The one in the center of the image is more elaborate and is actually made of clay.  The brush and twig fire would be fed through the lower opening while the pot to be heated would be placed on the circular opening on the top of the “stove.”

During mild weather, probably eight months of the year, cooking was probably done outdoors, just outside of the house.

This reconstructed Israelite House is on display at the Haaretz Museum in north Tel Aviv.
