Looking north along the western wall of the synagogue. Note the pilasters (partial columns) attached to the wall. The white outer west wall of the fourth (but more probably fifth/sixth) century synagogue is clearly visible.
Underneath the upper white synagogue, is the black basalt foundation of an earlier building. This lower structure was similar in size but was built on a slightly different orientation. The excavators believe that this is the black basalt foundation of the synagogue that existed in Capernaum in the days of Jesus.
