View of the "skull" - looking northeast.  Just to the right of center the two eye sockets and the bridge of the nose are visible.

In 1842, Otto Thenius proposed that this was Calvary (Golgotha) - the place of the skull - the site of the crucifixion of Jesus. This proposal was given prominence by the British general Charles Gordon in 1883 in combination with the nearby tomb that had been discovered in 1867. Personal comment: in spite of my appreciation of the sincerity of those associated with the Garden Tomb, it is my opinion that the Church of the Holy Sepulcher preserves a more accurate tradition with respect to the sites of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus.
