View looking west at the east entrance to the Treasury of the Athenians.  A number of treasuries lined the sacred path that led up to the Temple of Apollo.

This treasury was built in 490 B.C. with booty from the Greek victory over the Persians at Marathon.  It was reconstructed in 1904–1906 by the French and is again being refurbished (2004).  It is a Doric style building with two columns “in antis.” It measures 33 x 20 ft. [10 x 6 m.] and most of the stones used in the reconstruction were found in the area.  Note the triglyphs and metopes in the frieze.

The walls are decorated with inscriptions and wreaths — Click Here to view one.

“Treasuries” were used for the storage of cult objects, votive offerings, documents, etc.
